Mothering the Mother

The first days after giving birth can be both a very happy time and tiring time. Mom has just completed one of the most difficult tasks she will ever do and may be going without full nights of sleep for weeks to come. It is also a time that mom should be able to enjoy her first moments with baby and not worry about all the other household chores that need to be done. No mama should have to be alone during this time or feel stressed that she can't get everything done that she needs to. Unfortunately, not everyone has family nearby or with availability to help, like in the days of old when it was common to have this much needed support. This is where the job of a postpartum doula comes in (Doula is a Greek word that means "a woman who serves.")

A professionally trained postpartum doula comes alongside of the mama to offer personalized support that may include things like cooking, cleaning, running errands, preparing soothing baths and herbal teas, watching baby for a little while so mom can take a shower,  lending support to siblings in the house, providing breastfeeding support and education, assistance with baby care and education with things like diapering, bathing, baby wearing, calming and soothing a crying baby, and much more.  It can also include organizing schedules for family and friends of the mother to come and bring meals.

Part of our postpartum service also includes emotional support. Although a postpartum doula is not a medical caregiver or psychologist, most postpartum doulas are mothers themselves and are a great listening ear and someone who knows what you are going through. She has also been trained to provide support and resources during this time and can help you write your birth story and process any emotions you are having after birth. If you are needing medical attention, she can help you find the resources you need for that as well.

If you are a mom of multiples or with babies in the NICU, a postpartum doula can especially be helpful for you to give you extra support caring for your babies alongside of you! Our postpartum doula has personal experience with a stay in the NICU and has a heart for those who are going through such a difficult situation.
